HIGHWAY OF LIFE
(Play the song "Do you know where you're going to "by Diana Ross)
"Do you know where you are going to?
Do you know the road I travel on?"
You may have heard the expression HIGHWAY OF LIFE. Is there such a thing or is it just a cliché?
I believe life is a road to God.
Sometimes life is like a motorway. We seem to be speeding through life with just ourselves and nobody else around. We must be careful that we don't become too bored and fall asleep at the wheel. Life should not pass us by. We should take stock of the warning signs along the way. If we don't slow down we might have an accident or pile-up in our lives. We should be aware of others all around us. Those we overtake in life and those who overtake us.
Troubles can come together and we must be ready for these. Sometimes we cannot avoid a few bumps and scratches, but they should make us better prepared next time. We may even be hit from behind. However, with outside help we can rebuild our lives and try again.
Sometimes life is like a busy road through the centre of town. We think we're getting somewhere but every now and then we have to stop for traffic lights or too much traffic. Life appears to be going on nicely when we are suddenly caught short. We have to stop and wait for the problem to be sorted and then travel on again. Traffic on busy roads has to give and take. This is what we all have to do if we want to get on in life. We have to be prepared to let people in. To show them the right lane or direction to take.
Sometimes life is like a country lane twisting and turning through beautiful scenery. We can take life slowly appreciating the beauty around us that makes up God's creation.
Whichever way you go through life, either a motorway, busy town road or country lane it will still lead eventually to the end - to God.
We each have our own map to show where to go. If we get lost on the highway of life we can turn to God and his callout time is instant.
Sometimes it is very difficult to find the right map or follow it clearly. It may appear as if we are stuck on the same endless motorway or simply going around in circles not able to find the right junction or turning. Just pull onto the hard shoulder of life, find the emergency phone and call God. He will help you find your way. You will "know where you are going to".
Jesus told us himself that he was, "The way, the truth and the Life"
Read John 14:5-7
Thomas said, "Lord, we do not know where you are going: so how can we know the way to get there? Jesus answered him, "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life: no-one goes to the Father except by me".
If we follow the way of Jesus we know that he will always make sure we are on the right road. He will always be with us. In the words of the hymn we will sing,
"I will be with you wherever you go
Go now throughout the world
I will be with you in all that say
Go now and spread my word".
Hymn: I will be with you
